Section A Practise: Waterloo Road Clip

The first scene of this clip consists of two teen boys attempting to hide a broken camera but getting caught by a significantly older man who can be classed as middle aged. One construct that has been represented here is the stereotype that teenagers are often describes as troublesome or criminalistic. This is shown by the fact that they have broken an object that doesn't belong to them but rather belongs to the school and then trying to cover up what they have done. Mise-en-scene has managed to represent the construct of how age can influence a hierarchy. The older an individual is, the higher up in the hierarchy they are and the more extensive authority they have. The middle aged staff member portrays this authority that he possesses through the way he instructs the boys to hand over the broken device. His body language is strong and stern, with his facial expression possessing no signs of humour or compassion. Sound is also used here with the clicking of his fingers. This digetic sound indicates the patronising personality the older man shows and how he knows that the two boys have no choice but to listen. Also, dialogue is used where he simply states "Give it." The short, stern tone of voice and the quick succession in the way he says this shows that there is no lenience in what he is saying and he expects them to obey his order. The idea of hierarchy is reinforced a short while later when a teacher in the category of 20-30 is introduced. She is shown as being higher in the hierarchy that the teen boys but lower than the middle aged man. This has been done through her stern dialogue when she asks the rhetorical question "Do you have any idea how much this costs?" indicating that the boys will be in trouble for the damage they have caused. However, it is shown that she is of a lower hierarchy than the middle aged man as her persona changes into that of a timid shy individual when he directs his patronising, stern and sarcastic character on to her when he finds out that her responsibility of getting insurance on the broken camera has not been fulfilled.
